? Italian Basil
?? Sowing period:
For cold regions like Hokkaido: May-June
For Kanto to Chubu regions: Mid-April to mid-June
For Kyushu and Okinawa: April to early June
?? Harvesting: You can harvest when the stems grow to about 20-30 cm in height. Use garden scissors to cut only the amount you need, starting with the tender leaves from the top. Don't forget to pinch the tip of the central stem at this time. This is called topping, and it allows nutrients to reach the small buds growing between the stems, increasing your harvest yield.
Basil loves heat and grows rapidly as the temperature rises. It's easy to cultivate and harvest with little effort, making it a recommended first vegetable for beginner home gardeners.
Basil, with its unique flavor, is an indispensable herb in Italian cuisine.
In Japan, basil was initially used as a traditional Chinese medicine, but its popularity spread with the rise of Italian cuisine.
