Description
The holes are not decoration. This is a garlic keeper, and the ring of pierced holes around the shoulder plus the second ring at the base exist so air moves through the jar. Garlic rots in a sealed container and sprouts in the light, so the answer is an opaque pot that breathes, which is a problem potters solved centuries before anybody sold a plastic one. The glaze is a shino family orange, thick and slightly crawled where it pools, breaking to a pale ochre over the throwing ridges and to a deeper rust where it ran down the belly. Carbon trapping under the surface has left the darker blooms you can see in the photographs. None of that is repeatable; it is what the kiln did that day. The lid seats properly and turns without binding, which sounds trivial and is the hardest part of making a lidded pot, because the lid and the pot shrink at slightly different rates in the firing. A signature is brushed on the underside. Use it for garlic, shallots, or nothing at all. It works standing empty next to a stove, which is more than the plastic one does. Condition: Used. No chips, no cracks and no crazing found. Lid seats correctly and turns freely. All pierced holes clear. Signed on the underside. Unglazed foot with kiln grit as fired.
