(Product Explanation)
This is one of the works by Denis Diderot, who, along with Jean le Rond d'Alembert, completed the compilation of the Encyclopédie during the 18th-century Enlightenment. This print clearly depicts the process of setting metal type and printing in a print shop, offering a fascinating glimpse into the actual work of that era. The extremely careful hand-coloring and the use of antique-toned colors result in a truly magnificent piece.
This particular print is one of the diagrams illustrating processes such as letterpress printing and bookbinding, making it highly popular among those interested in old books and prints. It is a work that is extremely difficult to obtain in Japan. The inner edge of the frame used is gilded, giving the overall framing a sense of gravitas. Additionally, a descriptive note from the antique map dealer from whom I purchased it is attached to the back of the frame (see attached photos).
