(Product Description)
Title: Insulae Promontorii Viridis, Hispanis Issas de Cabo verde...
Publication Year: Circa 1670
Size: Image: Height 24.5cm, Width 30.8cm
Frame: Height 42.0cm, Width 50.0cm
Creator: John Ogilby
Method of Creation: Copperplate engraving, monochrome
Certificate: Certificate of purchase is included
Condition: While there is overall age-related toning, it is in good condition for a work that is approximately 350 years old. The original margins have been slightly trimmed, but as shown in the photos, the margins remain sufficiently wide. There is a vertical fold in the center of the image, which is due to the map being folded and published with backing paper applied to the reverse side, a characteristic of genuine antiques. The pressing marks of the work itself are clearly visible.
The mat is green, and the frame is gold with an antique finish, elegantly complementing the monochrome artwork in a simple yet luxurious manner. Please note that, as shown in photo 18, the frame has minor scratches due to age in some areas, so please refrain from purchasing if you are looking for a new item. However, as seen in the first photo, it is a beautifully framed piece that is perfectly suitable for viewing from a distance. The back of the frame is not sealed with tape, allowing the backing board to be removed for viewing the artwork itself.
Additionally, as shown in the last photo, this item comes with the original yellow cloth bag and slipcase (which show signs of age-related wear) from when it was purchased, and these will be included with the item.
(Product Explanation)
This map is a nautical chart of the Cape Verde Islands off the west coast of Africa, published around 1670 by the renowned Dutch cartographer John Ogilby. It was created as a smaller work based on the prominent Blaeu atlas of the time. The upper right corner features an ornate title cartouche, while the lower left corner has a scale cartouche with cherubs surrounding a celestial globe. The ocean is depicted with a grid of rhumb lines, resulting in a captivating nautical chart.
