The viola d'amore is an instrument used during the Baroque period (especially from the late 17th to early 18th centuries), classified closer to the viol family than the violin family.
Like a violin or viola, it is played resting on the shoulder, and beneath the bowed strings (playing strings) are sympathetic strings that are simply strung.
The resonance of the sympathetic strings creates an echo, resulting in a characteristic sweet and warm tone and sound that envelops the listener.
Even in later periods, there are a few pieces of music that utilize this instrument due to its unique sweet and warm tone.
Instruments with similar sympathetic strings include the baryton, which resembles the viol, and the Norwegian folk instrument Hardingfele (Hardanger fiddle).

The body length is 14 inches, making it approximately the same size as a 4/4 violin.
It features a standard 6+6 string configuration (6 playing strings + 6 sympathetic strings).
The playing strings are natural gut strings (the 6th string is nylon), and the tuning is in D, assuming Baroque pitch (A=415Hz).
