This CD features Symphony No. 4 by Gustav Mahler, a representative composer of the late Romantic period. Among his symphonies, this piece is particularly concise and accessible, characterized by its crystal-clear beauty, evoking dreams of heavenly life, quoting poetry from Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy's Magic Horn).

The performance is a golden collaboration between the renowned Italian conductor Claudio Abbado and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Abbado's meticulous yet warm baton work beautifully draws out the rich and supple sound, imbued with the tradition of the Vienna Philharmonic. Particularly noteworthy is the singing of Frederica von Stade in the fourth movement; her pure and elegant voice perfectly embodies Mahler's intended image of heaven seen through the eyes of an innocent child. The solo performances by each instrument are also superb, making this a masterpiece that allows you to immerse yourself in supreme lyricism, as if capturing the very atmosphere of Vienna.
