New Instrument "Shakunei" (New wind instrument based on Shakuhachi) Wide bore A pitch

This instrument captures the depth of the shakuhachi while incorporating the diverse playing techniques of the Native American flute.

Crafted from high-quality susudake bamboo, this new type of wind instrument allows for Native American flute-style playing (without a embouchure or mouthpiece, played by holding the flute diagonally to produce sound) using the same hole spacing as a shakuhachi.
Finished with walnut oil.
The pitch when all holes are covered is A.
Total length is 710mm.

It has a remarkably resonant sound. You can hear its sound by searching for 尺ネイ 太管 (Shakunei Futobuto) on the video platform Vimeo.

The last photo shows how to hold a Native American flute; the Shakunei is played at the same angle.

★What is Susudake (煤竹)? Susudake is bamboo taken from the attics or ceilings of old thatched-roof folk houses. It is characterized by its unique reddish-brown or amber color, naturally formed over 100 to 200 years by being smoked by the fires of irori (traditional Japanese sunken hearths). Areas directly exposed to smoke are deeply discolored, while areas where smoke did not directly reach due to being bound by ropes have lighter discoloration, resulting in a beautiful expression with variations in tone on a single piece of bamboo. In recent years, the number of susudake itself has become increasingly rare, and it is common for a single piece to cost hundreds of thousands of yen or more. (Quoted from Wikipedia)
