This boutique winery was founded by the French in 1688 who moved to South Africa, and is currently headed by their descendant, Gerard de Villiers. It is also famous for having Alberto Antonini, a genius winemaker who surprised the world with the immediate release of Testamatta and also served as a consultant for Au Bon Climat in California, as a consultant. The aroma is dominated by blueberry, wild bramble, and cassis, with charming floral notes of violet and fynbos. The finish is rounded off with spice, black pepper, and sage. It has a fresh acidity, a youthful and surprisingly voluminous taste. Oak-derived barrel aging is wonderfully integrated with notes of leather and tobacco. The powerful finish leads to an elegant aftertaste. Aged for 18 months in 300L French oak barrels. 15% new barrels, 35% second-fill, and 50% third-fill barrels were used. Shipped after 4 years of bottle aging.
