Mochi Rice Happy Hill Seeds, Created by the Legendary Natural Farming Advocate

16.50 $
Description
This is glutinous rice from the Happy Hill variety, said to have been developed by the late Masanobu Fukuoka, a revered figure in natural farming.
Happy Hill is reportedly named after Mr. Fukuoka: Fuku (福) meaning Happy and Oka (岡) meaning Hill (^^).

Due to last year's unfavorable weather, we have limited stock, so please order early.

■ About Masanobu Fukuoka ■
He advocated for natural farming, characterized by no tilling, no fertilizer, no pesticides, and no weeding, through his writings, earning high praise internationally.
His famous work is The One-Straw Revolution.

*Please note that there are differing opinions regarding his methods. I am not endorsing them.*

■■ Features ■■

The ears of rice resemble millet ears (unusual).
It is an ultra-high-yield rice.
It is a late-maturing variety, so it may not be suitable for cold regions.

I cultivated it as upland rice in my field, but it can reportedly be harvested without issue in paddy fields as well.

■■ Cultivation Method ■■

1. Hot water sterilization about a week before sowing (March-June).
Immerse in 60°C water for about 10 minutes, then cool in cold water.
It's the same as regular rice, so search for rice seed hot water sterilization for details.

2. Soaking (change water daily). When the grains swell, they are ready for sowing.

---- Skip the above if it's too much trouble ----

3. Direct sow in the field, or sow 3-5 seeds per pot or plug tray.
Unlike paddy rice, it tillers less, so sowing multiple seeds in one spot is recommended.
Also, since rice has slow initial growth, transplanting is recommended to prevent it from being outcompeted by weeds.

4. Top-dress and hill up the soil about a month later.

5. Ensure adequate water supply when the ears emerge.
However, you won't need to do anything unless there's a prolonged drought.

6. When the ears droop and the entire plant turns yellow, it's time to harvest.
Confirm the grains are hard and cut with a sickle.
Be aware of bird damage just before harvest.

7. Bundle the harvested rice into manageable portions and dry them.
Dry for about two weeks in a place protected from rain if possible.

It can also be grown in planters or on balconies.
Even though it's upland rice, it likes water, so it's suitable for bucket cultivation.
