Nikko-Suna refers to the hardest type of pumice-like Kanuma soil, mined around Kanuma City, specifically from the Nikko City area of Tochigi Prefecture. It is said to be harder than even high-grade hard Kanuma soil, truly representing the finest quality of Kanuma soil.

While Kanuma soil is readily available at home centers nationwide, Nikko-Suna is rarely found in home centers, even within Tochigi Prefecture. It is expensive (approximately twice the price of hard Kanuma soil, and more than three times the price of general Kanuma soil) and difficult to obtain.

It is sterile, boasts excellent drainage and aeration, retains moisture, and is extremely hard, resisting deformation. Therefore, it is primarily used in soil mixes for high-quality bonsai, orchids, and wild plants.

Larger granules are used as drainage material at the bottom of pots.

Its high drainage and aeration, along with its extreme hardness, make it suitable for soil mixes for succulents such as Haworthia, Agave, and cacti.
