Bodhidharma, also known as Daruma in Japan and also called Daruma Soji or Bodai Daruma, was an Indian Buddhist monk and the founder of the Chinese Zen school.
The name Daruma originally comes from Sanskrit and means Dharma (law/truth).
Born a prince in Southern India, Bodhidharma traveled to China. However, he was not favored by Emperor Wu of Liang at the time and went to the Shaolin Temple on Mount Song (it is said that Emperor Wu later regretted this greatly).
There is a legend that Bodhidharma meditated facing a wall for nine years at Shaolin Temple (menpeki).
Afterward, he took disciples such as Huike and Tanlin, and Zen spread throughout China.
From Bodhidharma's actions and life, today Daruma is revered and worshipped as a symbol of indomitable spirit and the fulfillment of great aspirations.
It is used not only as an incense burner for burning incense but also as a feng shui interior for good luck and warding off evil.
*Due to the use of natural wood, the grain and color may vary slightly for each item.
