Ihai are Buddhist ritual objects used to enshrine and honor the spirits of the deceased. They are considered important for ancestral veneration.
The front of the Ihai is inscribed with the posthumous Buddhist name (kaimyo).
Even without a kaimyo, an Ihai can be created using the deceased's secular name (zokumyo) by adding 之霊位 (no reii) after the name. This is considered to have the same meaning as receiving a kaimyo.

If you wish to have the kaimyo and other inscriptions handwritten, we will do so with care and free of charge, rather than using a machine. Please refer to the last image for examples.
After winning the auction, please provide the desired kaimyo, posthumous title (e.g., Koji for men, Daishi for women), date of death, secular name (full name), and age at death. We will then hand-write the inscriptions for free. Of course, you are also welcome to purchase the Ihai without inscriptions.

We will also hand-write the date of death, secular name (full name), and age at death for free.

In the Kanto region, the kaimyo and date of death are typically inscribed on the front of the Ihai, and the secular name and age at death on the back.

In the Tokai and western Japan regions, only the kaimyo is inscribed on the front, and the secular name and age at death are inscribed on the back.

There are regional differences. If you already have ancestral Ihai, we can create the new one to match that layout.

About this Ihai:
★ This Ihai is made from Shitan (Rosewood), one of the highest-grade woods used for Ihai.
Shitan is a wood produced in East Asia and not in Japan. It is one of the Three Great Tropical Timbers of the World, is very expensive, and has been used as a high-quality wood since ancient times.
Ihai made from Shitan and Kokutan (Ebony) are considered high-grade Ihai.
It is a deep wine-colored, high-quality wood, most commonly found in the traditional Chinese woodworking crafts housed in the Shosoin Imperial Repository. It has been treasured since ancient times as a top-quality material.
Its gentle wine color complements Buddhist altars, making it popular among women.
Shitan wood is considered a popular choice for women's Ihai, and this is one reason for its popularity.
