Description
Hanging scroll for Buddhist altar and memorial tablet, Jodo Shu, Jodo Shinshu, Amida Nyorai
Scroll height: 30cm, width: 11cm
Decorating your Buddhist altar with a hanging scroll where memorial tablets are placed creates a more solemn space. It also plays a role in deepening the spiritual connection with the Buddha during memorial services, bringing mental peace. Therefore, altar scrolls are not just decorative items but important Buddhist implements filled with respect and prayers for the Buddha.
In a broad sense, the original meaning of a Buddhist altar is a home version of a temple. Just as temple main halls always have a principal image (Gohonzon), having a Gohonzon in a Buddhist altar signifies that the deceased will be protected even in the world of Buddha, and also that we who are alive will also be protected.
Regarding the relationship between the Gohonzon and the memorial tablet, it implies that the Gohonzon watches over the memorial tablet.
