British Antique Wooden Wheel Back Chair / Dining Chair (91-203-12)

A vintage wooden wheel-back chair found in the English countryside.
Circa 1930s. Elm wood.

A chair with a traditional Windsor bow design, where the backrest is shaped like a bow.

Wheel-back refers to a chair that, as the name suggests, has a wheel on its back.

The most distinctive feature is the gracefully curved backrest, made from a single piece of wood bent into an arch. Not only is it aesthetically beautiful, but the bentwood backrest is also resilient and very strong.

Rather than feeling distinctly British, it evokes an early American atmosphere for Japanese people. And for good reason: while Windsor chairs originated in Britain, they developed in America alongside furniture like Shaker furniture and became globally popular as Colonial style.

This particular chair is a wheel-back style, but its shape is said to have been influenced by the Queen Anne style backrest popular in the 18th century, forming its basic design.

In other words, designs favored by the aristocracy were incorporated into the lives of common people. Subsequently, Windsor chairs evolved in various ways over time, continuing to be loved worldwide to this day.

The aged patina and rustic texture, characteristic of vintage antiques, exude a nostalgic atmosphere, adding a pleasant warmth and comfort to any space. Simply displaying it will add depth to your interior.

It's perfect for use as a shop display item, or for creating a scene reminiscent of European films or interior magazines by combining it with antique furniture in your everyday space. It would also be interesting to pair it with modern furniture.
