Obsidian Stone Flute Gion 251101-2
Dialogue with the Gods
The sound of stone flutes used in the Jomon period can be seen as a kind of signal or communication. It is believed to have been used in rituals (worship of gods and ancestors) and for kami-oroshi (spirit appeasement). This is because the ancient Japanese perception of sound was magical and rooted in nature worship, and they believed that mystical sounds were necessary for dialogue with nature and the gods.
Lacquer, used in lacquerware. It is a wonderful material with a unique color and texture. In Japanese musical instruments, it is sometimes applied to the inside of shakuhachi and stone flutes.
