This is a Japanese umbrella that my mother, born in the Taisho era, used with care for her Nihon Buyo (Japanese dance) practice.

It features a stylish Janome (snake's eye) pattern with a beautiful contrast of navy blue and white.

The way it stands when opened is beautiful, and you can feel the meticulous craftsmanship in the bamboo frame and the decorative threads at the center.

There are some scuffs due to age and changes in the texture of the Japanese paper (please see photos), but there are no major tears.

The umbrella opens and closes smoothly and is still perfectly usable.

We would be happy to pass it on to someone who can appreciate the unique charm of this vintage item.

It is perfect not only for Nihon Buyo lessons and performances but also as a prop for photo shoots for Coming-of-Age ceremonies, pre-wedding photos, and Shichi-Go-San (a traditional rite of passage for young children), as it photographs beautifully.

It also makes a wonderful item for cosplay or as a Japanese-style display for your room or shop.
