Iwami Kagura Mask Fox Mask Kagura Mask Traditional Performing Arts
This item was displayed in my home.
The upper and lower jaws are separate, as is typical for Iwami Kagura masks.
This mask is used in performances such as Akko Den and Kurozuka, and depicts the appearance of Tamamo-no-Mae (the nine-tailed fox) when she reveals her true form.
Unlike other Kagura masks, Iwami Kagura masks are made by layering Sekishu Washi paper multiple times. This makes them very lightweight compared to carved wooden masks, and they are well-suited for the vigorous dances of Iwami Kagura.
