Oni Mask (Demon Mask) Hannya Mask
Wood Carving, Flat Carving, Wall Hanging
Shimane Iwami Kagura

This is a powerful wooden Hannya mask, inspired by the Oni masks used in Shimane Prefecture's traditional performing art, Iwami Kagura.
The artist is Shimotsuma Rakuzan (Maker's Mark: Shimotsuma Tadashi). This artist-made piece is impressive for its strong yet delicate carving, characteristic of flat carving, and its form that skillfully utilizes the wood grain.
The sharply rising horns, deeply carved eyebrows and bridge of the nose, and the expression that evokes a sense of sacredness amidst its ferocity, all contribute to the unique presence of a Kagura mask. It comes with a back panel for wall hanging, making it easy to display and an excellent accent for any Japanese-style space.
