This is a Kagura mask [Red Oni / Blue Oni].
This is an Iwami Kagura style mask.
Kagura originally began with ancient people dancing to pray for good health and rejuvenation of the soul, and it is said that this ritual of soul-purifying dances gave rise to various Shinto ritual performing arts.
A mold is made from clay, Japanese paper is carefully layered, coated with dissolved funori (seaweed glue), and then colored.
*Persimmon tannin is used as an insect repellent.
The hair of the Kagura mask is made from horse manes.
It will naturally settle slightly due to gravity.
