This is a Kagura mask [Hannya].
This is a Kuchi-e mask in the Iwami Kagura style.
Kagura originally began with ancient people dancing to pray for good health and rejuvenation of the soul, and it is said that this soul-purifying ritual is the origin of various Shinto ritual performances.
A mold is made from clay, Japanese paper is carefully layered, a mixture of gofun (oyster shell powder) is applied, and then painted.
There is a unique smell when worn.
The hair is made of horsehair, a mixture of brown and white.
A board will be attached to the back of the mask for display when shipped.
