Antique Point de Venise Dog and Human Gazing at Each Other Beautiful Needle Lace Doily

A beautiful antique Venetian lace piece from the island of Burano, Italy, depicting a dog and a person.

This listing includes a Point de Venise lace doily and a blue linen fabric for framing.

Scene: A dog sits among flowers/bushes, with a person leaning on a hoe and sitting on a tree stump. The eyes, nose, mouth, and hands are all meticulously embroidered. The person appears to be either male or female. Perhaps they are taking a break from farm work? They are looking at each other and smiling. A lovely small artwork with a picturesque presence.

A heartwarming, lively, and charming scene that soothes the soul.

Fine mesh, lattice-like whitework is intricately woven within the outline.

Details such as the tree, leaves (stems and flowers?), tree stump, person, dog, and ground are precisely rendered with eyelet stitches.

Bridges of thread are woven across open spaces, like the nets used by fishermen. Delicate leaves and picot lace are charmingly incorporated. It looks as if butterflies are also flying.

This lacy depiction of people and scenery is meticulously hand-stitched one small stitch at a time using only a needle and linen thread. The center is a deep ivory/cream beige. This technique is stronger and more durable than other lace methods.

The surrounding scalloped bobbin lace is in a Bruges style with a slightly darker, light patina tone. It is softly woven with very fine thread, giving it a light, delicate, and elegant feel.

Please excuse any errors in the amateur measurements below.

Diameter: Approximately 21.2 cm
Center: Approximately 11 cm
Weight: Approximately 6g
*The blue linen fabric is an unused remnant.

Upon close inspection, only the edge of one scallop diagonally below the dog's legs has a light brown/tan age discoloration, but it is barely noticeable and the piece is in very good condition. Please excuse minor imperfections as this is an aged handmade item.

The delicacy, texture, and warmth unique to handcraft.

Place it on a table or chest. Framing it with a double-sided glass frame or a fabric background will make the intricate woven patterns stand out clearly and enhance its artistic quality, creating a beautiful display. We hope you enjoy using it!
