This is a mini-sized Byobu (folding screen), a traditional Japanese decorative item.
Artwork Background: With an inscription dated the 5th year of the Genna era (1619), it follows the lineage of the oldest Tenjin Engi (tales of Tenjin) passed down at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Kyushu.
Content: It depicts the story of Sugawara no Michizane until he was enshrined as Tenman Tenjin after his death.
Artistic Features: It is of very high quality as an early Edo period picture scroll, and is presumed to be by a painter of the Tosa school.
Technique: The coloring and brushwork are delicate, and it is characterized by the scattering of gold and silver kirihaku (cut foil) on the blank areas (such as the ground).
Scene: It depicts the scene in the first year of the Engi era (901) when Michizane was exiled to Dazaifu by order of Emperor Daigo, leaving his familiar homeland.
