[Reference]
The Saigoku Thirty-three Kannon Pilgrimage is a collective term for 33 sacred sites related to Kannon worship scattered across 2 prefectures and 4 prefectures in the Kinki region and Gifu Prefecture. Pilgrimage to these sacred sites is the oldest pilgrimage in Japan, and many worshipers still visit today.
The Thirty-three originates from the belief in the Lotus Sutra, Chapter 25 (Kannon Sutra), which states that Kannon Bodhisattva transforms into 33 forms to save sentient beings. Visiting the 33 sacred sites of the Saigoku Thirty-three Kannon Pilgrimage is believed to erase all sins committed in this life and lead to rebirth in paradise.
