Description
Fujiko Hemming Handshake with Karajan Copperplate Etching 51/80 Signed by Artist

This copperplate etching, Handshake with Karajan, is by the world-renowned pianist Fujiko Hemming (1931–2024). It depicts a scene of the young Fujiko Hemming shaking hands with Herbert von Karajan, one of the 20th century's most celebrated conductors.

Known as the Pianist of the Soul, Hemming also demonstrated exceptional talent in painting from a young age, influenced by her father, who was a painter and architect.

This is a magnificent piece that conveys the tense, still air of an indoor space. The charm of this work lies in its abstract expression, capturing exquisite facial expressions.

As a side note, this artwork inspired me to listen to her performances. Her playing is deeply moving and truly wonderful, so please do listen if you have the time. After hearing her music, you will surely enjoy this artwork even more.
