■Work Features
・Depicted items:
The print depicts seafood such as octopus, sea bream, pufferfish, and flounder, which were local specialties of Kanagawa-juku.
・Background: The tray on which the fish are placed has the characters Hanesawa written in vermilion.
This was the name of a prominent inn in Kanagawa-juku, famous for serving fresh seafood dishes at the time.
This work is part of a series called Ejima Kiko, which depicts local scenery related to pilgrimages to Enoshima.
At the top of the screen, a selected poem from a kyoka (comic poetry) group called Manjiren is included, reflecting the sophisticated tastes of cultural figures of the time.
The artist, Uoya Hokusai, originally ran a fish shop, from which he took his artist name. After studying under Hokusai, he produced many exquisite and elegant prints, earning high acclaim.
This work was originally part of an Edo-period folding screen, from which it was cut out and preserved as a Ukiyo-e print. The original paper from the folding screen is still attached to the back. This piece offers a unique texture and the breath of the era, characteristic of works originally mounted on screens.
