The lock (latch) is marked BRITISH MADE PAT№ 236731. This is a British patent number, likely referring to a patent for a case locking mechanism registered around the mid-1920s (circa 1925). This type of lock is commonly found on high-quality wooden violin and instrument cases from the early to mid-20th century. The diamond-shaped mark is often associated with the British design registration system (1842-1883). However, simple diamond logos marked BRITISH MADE like this were widely used on export products after the McKinley Tariff Act of 1891 (which mandated country of origin labeling for exports) or as manufacturer identifiers in the first half of the 20th century. This type of lock can be disengaged by sliding the round part sideways when it is unlocked. The key is not included.
