Description
Evading the Spanish fleet, which solely held papal approval to engage in the slave trade, John Hawkins proceeds to Africa where he buys captives from warring tribes and attempts to sell them as slaves in the New World. His plan is foiled by the Spanish fleet, and the book recounts the subsequent outcomes as various crew members struggle back to England. Wisely and beautifully written.
