This is a story from the Northern and Southern Dynasties period in China, where Bodhidharma, considered the founding figure of Zen Buddhism, meditated facing a wall for nine years at the Shaolin Temple on Mount Song, and attained enlightenment. It is an idiom for patiently working on one thing for a long time.
