To z*z: A photograph from the 1942 Toho film "The War at Sea from Hawaii to Malaya," with a handwritten signature by Eiji Tsuburaya.
Thank you for viewing.
This is a photograph (a scene) from the 1942 Toho film The War at Sea from Hawaii to Malay, autographed by Eiji Tsuburaya.
Film Background
This film was a state-sponsored production depicting the attack on Pearl Harbor and the victory at the Battle of the Coral Sea, made with the aim of boosting morale at the time.
Special Effects Technology
Eiji Tsuburaya, known as the God of Special Effects, was in charge of the special effects.
His meticulous miniature photography techniques were so advanced that there is an anecdote that Allied forces who saw the footage after the war mistook it for live-action.
It was ranked #1 in the 1942 Kinema Junpo Best Ten.
Below the photograph are the words 1967 The War at Sea from Hawaii to Malay.
This work was re-released in a revised version in 1968, and this photograph may be material created or organized in 1967 in connection with the preparation and promotion for that re-release.
This photograph, with its strong monochrome contrast, is presumed to be a part of the special effects scenes that Director Tsuburaya excelled at, such as the explosion scene of the attack on Pearl Harbor or the scenery from the cockpit of an aircraft flying through the clouds.
This photograph is considered a historically valuable piece of material, representing the origins of Japanese special effects films.
The framed size is approximately 31.6 cm (height) x 26.5 cm (width).
While not a candid photograph, it is a rare item with Eiji Tsuburaya's authentic autograph.
Thank you.
