Description
This is a product from Chouinard Equipment, founded by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard.
It is the predecessor to the current Black Diamond company.
The Crack-N-Up is an early seam hook designed in the 1980s for clean aid climbing by placing it by hand into tiny cracks.
The Crack-N-Up has an angled arm, which creates a slight camming effect when weight is applied to the hook. This angle also helps when placing it in corners.
It can be used for micro-nailing in extremely thin cracks, or for both applications.
Sizes ranged from #1 to #6.
In the early 1990s, climbers would cut off one arm of the Crack-N-Up to create the Bird Beak piton. The Bird Beak was highly effective for repeated ascents of thin seams. It could also be used effectively in places with bolt holes.
