Description
Vintage Cambodian Hol Pidan (often simply called a Pidan). It is a sacred Buddhist temple hanging handwoven from silk using the highly complex weft ikat (or hol) technique. Because an immense amount of these textiles were tragically destroyed during the Khmer Rouge era, genuine vintage and antique Cambodian pidans are incredibly rare and intensely sought after by textile collectors. The imagery woven into this piece isn't just decorative; it tells a sacred story, most likely scenes from the Vessantara Jataka (the story of the Buddha's past life as a prince who learns ultimate detachment and generosity). White Elephants: In the lower register, the white elephants represent the sacred rain-making elephant that Prince Vessantara selflessly gave away to a neighboring kingdom. Central Pavilion: The ornate temple structure in the middle houses figures that traditionally represent Prince Vessantara, his wife Maddhi, and their children. Equestrians: The figures riding white horses near the top represent royal attendants or the prince himself. Unwoven Border: The plain, striped tan section on the side is the original unpatterned border of the loom length, which is a great sign of an authentic, untrimmed piece. Material: Cotton Blend Pattern: Ikat Figural Technique: Hand Woven Theme: Elephant Origin: SE Asia Shape: Rectangular Measurements: • Length: 69 • Width: 33.5 Keywords: Bohemian, Global Decor, Tribal Art, Handwoven, Textile Art, Ethnic Home, Maximalist, Folk Art
