Antique Pewter Repousse Box 5 Round Floral Vanity Lidded Jar A decorative container with a cover made of tin and lead alloy. Inside there is a glass insert in cobalt color. The container was designed and made in Japan in the 1920s Style: The box features dense, heavily embossed detailing known as repousse, a metalworking technique where the design is hammered into relief from the reverse side. This style is commonly found in late 19th-century Victorian or early 20th-century Edwardian pewter metalware.  Structure: It consists of a round, domed lid complete with a decorative central finial knob, sitting flush atop a cylindrical base that mirrors the intricate floral patterns. On the inside is a blue glass insert. There are three pieces. The base, lid and inside dish. Stamp: The base is stamped with PAT NO    MADE IN JAPAN followed by four Japanese characters.  --The characters stamped next to Made in Japan are the traditional maker's mark or trademark registration. During the mid-20th century, Japanese foundries used Kanji characters or stylized Japanese symbols inside geometric borders to identify their workshops.    --Since the PAT NO is blank it indicates the salt cellar was manufactured during the first production run of this specific design—usually a brief window of 6 to 12 months while the factory waited for government approval.
