Oud Risha (Special Pick) Made from Whalebone - Set of 3

Crafted from the baleen of mink whales (2 pieces) and a fin whale (1 piece: the longest), these picks are made by carefully flattening the curved baleen and then meticulously shaping it with progressively finer grit sandpaper.

The tail end retains its brush-like texture, giving it a very authentic feel.
You may also choose to further thin it yourself with sandpaper to your preference.

These are revolutionary, top-quality oud picks, uniquely Japanese.
Historically, oud plectra were made from eagle feather quills. However, due to their scarcity and current regulations under the Washington Convention, they have become rare. Typically, synthetic resins or natural materials like buffalo horn or deer antler are used today.
In terms of sound quality, whale baleen (which is actually a filter in their mouths, not true whiskers) composed of β-keratin, the same component found in bird quills and human nails, offers a significant advantage. It produces a clear, yet soft and non-abrasive, stimulating sound, as if a thin membrane has been added.
Furthermore, unlike buffalo horn, whale baleen has a resilient fibrous quality that makes it less prone to breaking, which also benefits the sound quality.

The tip is thin, while the central part for holding is thicker.
