What is Omikihiki?
It is a folk event in the city of Ise for offering sacred timber for the rebuilding of the Ise Grand Shrine.
The Shikinen Sengu (ceremonial rebuilding) is the largest festival of the Ise Grand Shrine, held every twenty years. New shrine buildings are constructed in the ancient style, and sacred vestments and treasures are prepared, after which the deities move to the new shrine. Omikihiki is a service activity of offering the sacred timber for the shrine buildings that has become a folk event. This is one of the few opportunities for citizens to participate in the Sengu-related events, and it is held over two years every twenty years.
The event is when the city of Ise is most vibrant, with various styles of Hoekisha (procession vehicles) and unique traditions passed down through each group.
The Omikihiki event has been selected as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property for which measures should be taken to record its creation by the country, and has also been designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property by Ise City.
