Vintage Frank Cooper Oxford Marmalade Jar Sandland Ware | English Village Scene

A charming vintage ceramic marmalade jar made by Sandland Ware (Lancaster & Sandland Ltd., Hanley, Staffordshire, England) for Frank Cooper Ltd. of Oxford — makers of the famous Oxford Seville Orange marmalade since 1874. The jar is decorated with a detailed English village inn scene in warm ochres, greens and browns — a bustling courtyard with half-timbered buildings, chickens in the yard, and a figure at the door. The same scene continues on the fitted lid. A wonderful example of mid-20th century British transfer ware. These Sandland Ware jars were made to contain Frank Coopers marmalade and were kept and reused as kitchen canisters, tea holders, and desk pots — a tradition of practical beauty that says everything about postwar British domestic life.
