Mid Century PLATES 8.25" Handpainted Gambone Burro Mark? Vietri Made in Italy
Vietri
Vintage Pair of Mid-Century Era Gambone Vietri Italy Plates Hand Painted, Signed, 8.25 Diameter Decorative Pottery Sourced from a mid-century living estate sale. The 86-year-old previous owner told me these were her mother's, and that they had always hung on the dining room wall of their Brooklyn apartment home as decoration. She inherited them and estimated from her recollection that her mother got them in the 1940's, maybe 1950's. They were never used for dining, always hung, so there are no utensil marks or scratches. Both feature the same aqua teal and purple-reddish banding, but designs are different. They are hand-painted and appear to me to be purple scallions and a plum or eggplant. Recommended for decorative use only as they are genuine vintage, and it is not known if the type of paint used for decorating them had any lead content to it. No pottery damage. There is the characteristic tiny pinholes or imperfections in the glaze found in most pottery (shown blown-up in photos), but they were hand-crafted and glaze finished, so this is not uncommon. Signed on the backs. One has just ITALY, the other has what appears to be a poorly stamped mark of the Gambone Burro - it looks like a portion of the stamp was missed or swiped through the middle above the word ITALY. See blown-up pic.
