Trimingham Bermuda 1842-2005 Vintage Silk Scarf Hand-Rolled Flawless Map History
Trimingham's of Bermuda
Founded in 1842, Trimingham's (Officially Trimingham Brothers) was very much an upper-class British store from the start--it was still flying the Union Jack when it closed in July 2005. Much loved by visitors and locals alike, Trimingham's was very much a destination store long before that term was coined--both at its flagship store on Front Street and at its local branches throughout the island. Town & Country magazine in 1959 declared: “Next to Brooks Brothers, Trimingham’s is probably the best-known haberdashery in the Western Hemisphere Not to be outdone Fodor’s 1961 Guide to the Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda helpfully stated that the store had a “wide selection of bargains including doe-skin gloves, perfume, English handbags and Indian Madras sportswear.” Not surprisingly, Trimingham's was long beloved of the Anglophile Ivy set who vacationed in Bermuda. Trimingham's Ivy League associations are long established. The store was instrumental in encouraging tourism to the island from New York in the 1930s, and popularized the 'ensemble sets of wool sweater, skirt, and socks for women, often in pastels...... With sweater and sock sets for men. So iconic did these ensembles become in the 1930s that an example is now on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
