Description
This vintage trinket box centers on more than a decorative sailing ship. The lid bears a hand-applied illustration inscribed H.M.S. Niger, 1,072 Tons, Launched 1848, referencing the Royal Navy screw sloop whose service reflected one of the most significant periods of naval innovation in the nineteenth century. Named after the Niger River in West Africa, HMS Niger followed the Royal Navy's long-standing tradition of naming ships after rivers, seas, and other geographic landmarks. During her career she served in waters stretching from West Africa to the Crimea, China, Australia, and New Zealand. She also participated in propulsion trials that helped demonstrate the superiority of the screw propeller over paddle-wheel steamships, an advancement that shaped the future of naval engineering. That history gives this box a story beyond its craftsmanship. Rather than depicting an anonymous sailing vessel, it preserves the memory of a real warship whose name and service remain part of maritime history. The box itself carries no maker's mark, suggesting it was created by an individual artisan or produced in a small workshop. Decorative gold braid frames the illustration, while a felt-lined interior provides a safe place for jewelry, coins, watches, letters, or other small keepsakes. The hinge has been inspected and adjusted to ensure smooth operation. It is a distinctive piece that blends craftsmanship with a genuine connection to nineteenth-century naval history.
