The Rider-Waite deck, loved worldwide and considered the standard for tarot cards, was first published in 1909.

It was created by Arthur Edward Waite, a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a magical society founded in 19th-century Britain, who commissioned artist Pamela Colman Smith to illustrate it.

In Japan, it is affectionately known as the Rider Deck, Rider Tarot, or Rider-Waite-Smith Deck.
