It was released in theaters nationwide starting January 2015 and had a month-long run in Futako-Tamagawa, Tokyo, with sold-out screenings daily. It won two awards at the 2015 Madrid International Film Festival, including Best Foreign Language Documentary, and was nominated for the Environmental Award at the 2015 Sheffield International Documentary Festival, one of the world's top three documentary film festivals, receiving high acclaim both domestically and internationally.
Why have the Japanese people continued this ritual and offered prayers for over a thousand years?
Director Miyazawa, who has been filming Ise Jingu for 10 years, was granted exclusive access to capture precious footage from within the 2013 Shikinen Sengu (rebuilding ceremony). Combined with valuable interviews from leading figures in various fields who have sincerely engaged with the concept of Japan's forests for many years, and beautiful natural scenery that evokes a walk through a Japanese forest, this film is a genuine documentary that resonates with the senses.
For a thousand years, the Japanese people have lived with the forests.
What will you leave behind in a thousand years?
The film reveals how the forests of Ise Jingu, designed by nature, and the Shikinen Sengu ceremony, passed down for 1300 years, remind us that our daily lives and spiritual support are all connected to nature.
