Description
J. Sonneville, as it does bear his signature and he was extant from 1892-1971. He was an expert engraver employed by Regout and produced beautiful engravings, which he signed, or rather engraved his signature on. If unaware, Regout/Boch/Sphinx were familially incestuous and various of the companies produced his pieces as transfers, always transfers. Hence you see these pieces frequently and in various sizes. The stamp does read Made for Royal Sphinx Holland, but this is about RS (located in Maastricht, Holland), not Boch. Regout/Boch/Sphinx were all interrelated Belgian companies but, in the 1800s, there was a blockade of materials into the Netherlands so Petrus Regout, Sr. opened a factory in Maastricht, NL, to circumvent this, but retained his factory in Belgium. Most all Regout/Boch-for-Sphinx/Royal Sphinx pieces indicate country of production, whether Belgium or Holland, but typically specify Made in Belgium or Made in Holland, though this piece does not, suggesting a relatively older piece 20th Century with some De Porceleyne Fles handpainted pieces varying depending on the specifc DPF artist). Suggests that this piece was, in fact, produced in Belgium. As ceramic transfer technology was first introduced around 1919. P. Regout, which early on used the Sphinx name and lion, officially changed the company name to Sphinx in 1899. In 1960, Sphinx (Maastricht) was awarded the Royal designation which makes this piece having been made in 1960 or later. No chips or
