Description
★This is a horn with a special history. Gert Seifert, an unforgettable figure for horn players, joined the Berlin Philharmonic in 1964. At that time, Alexander, a German instrument manufacturer, primarily used Melchior instruments and Seifert did not use their own. In hopes of future use, Alexander specially provided Seifert with a 103GB model tailored for him.
However, Seifert, who originally preferred thick yellow brass, did not particularly like the thinner metal of the Alexander instrument. After trying it out in performances a few times, he decided it wasn't a good fit and gave it to his disciple at the time, a Japanese musician (formerly of the NHK Symphony Orchestra). This Japanese musician is my teacher, and in the 80s, he passed it on to me, who was looking for an Alexander, along with its story, saying it was an old instrument but would be fine.
Naturally, there is no serial number, it is hand-hammered, the lever joint is an elegant S-shape, and there is no water key. Although it is such a valuable and rare instrument, it has ended up in the condition shown in the photos for various reasons.
* There are approximately 15 dents and scratches of various sizes.
* The rotary valves are stiff and do not move, possibly because they have not been used for about 3 years, but they should work after disassembly and cleaning.
* The pinky hook has been moved and re-soldered to fit Seifert's hand.
* The original case was damaged, so it is now in a soft case.
* The weight, including the case, is 3.7kg.
★The playing feel is a deep, rich, smooth sound that is not found in modern Alexanders, with a subtle delay before the sound emerges, truly giving the sensation of being carried away by the breath. It also has a far-reaching sound. Those who understand will appreciate this charm.
Although I am now elderly and am organizing my various collections, I could not bring myself to part with this Alexander. However, I am reluctantly willing to pass it on if someone who will cherish it can be found.
Modern Alexanders have increased dramatically in price, but I would be truly honored if this instrument could be repaired and find its way into the hands of someone who will love it for a long time.
