Description
Brahms
① Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15
② Tragic Overture, Op. 81

Arthur Rubinstein (Piano)
Conductor: Zubin Mehta
Israel Philharmonic Orchestra ①
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra ②
Recorded: 1976

This is a famous performance highly recommended by popular music critic Kōyō Uno. Although Rubinstein was 89 years old at the time of recording, there is no sign of age-related decline; the performance overflows with a sense of ease and fresh sensibility. This was Rubinstein's final recording, and what is remarkable is the passion the maestro poured into this piece. Rubinstein recorded this concerto four times, but this recording is considered his representative performance. Regarding Piano Concerto No. 1, the sound quality of this imported version seems superior to the domestic release.

Music Critic: Kōyō Uno
Rubinstein enters with a slightly slower tempo, but one is immediately drawn to his calm, contemplative demeanor. His touch is always firm, and while he makes every complex note Brahms wrote resonate, it never sounds harsh, conveying a spiritual strength. The rhythm is robust and heroic, even the arpeggios sing, and his narrative is superb. The second theme is rich in harmony and full of flavor, whereas many pianists might render it as mere movement of notes. Here, Brahms's longing is fully realized.

Piano Concerto No. 1 immediately captivates the listener with its passionate music from the very beginning of the first movement. Just as you think, What magnificent music, you are further astonished by Rubinstein's piano entering so smoothly. While his technique may not be at its absolute peak, his expression has gained depth. There is no strain whatsoever, just a completely natural and relaxed expression. Mehta's conducting is also truly magnificent. Rubinstein's dignified and imposing performance, filled with emotion, is one of the finest interpretations of Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1 on CD. This is the pianist's final recording, yet what a fresh emotion and brilliance it possesses, conveying such majesty! The Israel Philharmonic also plays with full resonance.
