This CD is the 7th volume in the Vienna Philharmonic: Enchanting Masterpieces series, featuring renowned recordings from Deutsche Grammophon. It couples two of the most representative Romantic violin concertos: Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky. Mendelssohn's work, Op. 64, is praised as the Queen of Violin Concertos for its flowing melodies and perfect formal beauty, while Tchaikovsky's Op. 35 is a masterpiece that intertwines brilliant, powerful passion with Russian melancholy.
The performance features a luxurious lineup: the violin of 20th-century master Nathan Milstein and the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by a young Claudio Abbado. Milstein's performance is characterized by its elegant, clear tone and economical, refined technique, truly showcasing the Prince of Violinists. The rich sound of the Vienna Philharmonic, drawn out by Abbado, harmonizes beautifully with Milstein's refined bowing, conveying deep musicality without excessive sentimentality. It is a supreme performance that transcends time, with a passionate intensity that penetrates the core of the works, all within a dignified and noble framework.
