August 15, 1979 Live

Recorded here is Böhm's August 1979 live performance with the VPO featuring Brahms' Symphony No. 2 and more, from the conductor known as the King of Live Recordings!
Böhm was particularly fond of Brahms' Symphony No. 2, and this recording marks the fourth live performance of the work by him, following his March 1979 live recording with the BPO (WALL-7002/3), his 1975 live recording with the BPO (FKM-CDR27), considered his masterpiece, and his 1977 Tokyo live recording with the VPO (FKM-CDR824/5).
It is rare for a conductor's live performances to differ so greatly from their studio recordings, but Böhm's live performances are filled with a brilliance that makes him sound like a different person.
While the symphony is performed magnificently, the Overture to Oberon and the Alto Rhapsody with Christa Ludwig are also masterful performances full of Böhm's characteristic flavor.
