Inspired by Conor Oberst's Bright Eyes, who released the intense I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and Digital Ash In A Digital Urn, Ryan Adams released a staggering three albums in 2005. On the first, a double-disc set, the former Whiskeytown singer, who demands attention, showcases the strumming guitars of 2003's Rock N Roll, the rainy-day ballads of the same year's Love Is Hell, and the more improvisational moments and raw textures of 2002's Heartbreaker. The epic Meadowlake Street is a highlight, at least, and the nasally, radio-friendly Let It Ride is good, but most of the other songs are a collection of sleepy-eyed laments that sound too mannered after the raw pop ambition he's pushed in recent years. But Adams will surely make up for it on his next release.
