Pair of F.B. Rogers Silver Company Console Candleholders - Weighted Silverplate

These lovely F.B. Rogers Silver Company #748 candlesticks are a pair of vintage, weighted sterling silver candle holders (often called console or mantle candlesticks), typically produced in the mid-20th century. This pair from my grandmother's collection, features a rope-like decoration accented with dots.  F.B. Rogers Silver Company weighted candle holders are made with a very thin layer of sterling silver over a core of plaster, wax, or resin, rather than being solid silver or electroplated. They are stamped STERLING WEIGHTED to show that only the external metal is sterling. The term weighted means that a lightweight metal (like sterling silver) has been wrapped around a heavy inner base (like plaster, wax, or weighted metal) to give it stability and prevent tipping over.
