J.C. Leyendecker - Arrow Collars Ad - Charles Beach - Early 20th-Century.
J.C. Leyendecker
This original advertisement for Arrow Collars features Leyendecker's model and partner/companion Charles Beach. Leyendecker met Beach in 1903, when the young model from Cleveland first posed for him. The artist was impressed not only by Beach's handsome face and physique but also by his ability to hold poses for extended periods. Their relationship lasted until Leyendecker's death. Over the next thirty years, Beach's image as the Arrow Collar Man, as well as Leyendecker's other representations of him, became one of the most widely circulated visual icons in mainstream American culture. In this capacity, Beach became the symbol of American prosperity, sophistication, manliness, and style. It measures approximately 10 x 7 and has been carefully removed from Review of Reviews magazine. It's in great condition for its age. Scanned and photographed in natural light.
