Vintage Lady-Mate music jewelry box, made in Japan, plays Danube Wave Waltz when wound. Chrome-plated body with hand-painted floral panel on top (bright orange/red/yellow garden bouquet), red velvet interior, hinged mirror lid, round mirrored compartment where a dancing figure originally spun. Marked Lady-Mate on the base. Note: the dancing figure is no longer present. Lady-Mate boxes were exported from Japan in the 1960s and 70s, sold through catalog companies like Spiegel and at department store gift counters. They played Strauss waltzes or simple folk tunes and were a staple of mid-century vanities.
