※MLU001 / Linear Test Vehicle
Introduced in 1980 for the Miyazaki Experimental Line's U-shaped track. The 'U' in MLU stands for U-shaped track. It was equipped with superconducting electromagnets that generate strong magnetic fields, allowing for both levitation and propulsion using the same coils, which led to a successful reduction in vehicle size. Although operations were temporarily suspended in 1989, it was brought back into service in 1992 after its successor, the MLU002, was destroyed by fire.
